Protect Your Home from Storms

Here are are some tips on protecting your home from storms:

Keep your gutters and downspouts clean of debris. Be sure the downspouts direct water at least 3 feet away from your home. Clean debris from window wells to allow for proper drainage.

Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed. Make trees more wind resistant by removing diseased or damaged limbs, and then strategically remove branches so that wind can blow through. Strong winds frequently break weak limbs and hurl them at great speed, causing damage or injury when they hit.

Remove any debris or loose items in your yard. Branches and firewood may become missiles in strong winds. <p>
Secure any outdoor objects that may blow around causing damage to your home.

Shutter windows if possible or if shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains to prevent possible injury from breaking glass.

Know the condition of your roof and make any needed repairs.

If you have a sump pump, test it to make sure it is working properly. You may consider having one installed to prevent water from seeping into your basement.

Know what is covered in your Homeowner's Insurance in the event of any storm damage and be sure to take pictures of the damage as documentation for your insurance company.
